12.18.09 | RISTOBAR free pizzas, if you know the password

The makeover of the Emporio Rulli Gran Caffe in the Marina (2300 Chestnut at Scott) as Risto Bar has taken longer than owner Gary Rulli originally planned ― the launch is now promised for early next year. Today at noon, you can get a preview of the thin-crust pizzas exec chef Angelo Auriana will be slinging at Risto Bar ― for free. Turns out Rulli and Auriana have been testing pies in a special eco-friendly, energy-efficient pizza oven from Italy (said to cook eight pies in under three minutes). It’s housed in a warehouse adjacent to the Emilio Mitidieri slicer and espresso machine shop at 2129 Harrison (at Mariposa). Pizza-lovers who show up there today will be treated to demo pies (115 of ’em), wine and Prosecco, as well as porchetta and panettone. The catch? It’s first come, first served, and you have to know the password, sperakeasy-style. What is it? “Hungry.” Which, really, shouldn’t be hard to remember at lunchtime. Check out the event’s Facebook page for more info.
